Brain Boosting Foods: Alzheimer Prevention

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, neurodegenerative condition that leads to memory loss and other cognitive problems. It affects millions of people around the world, including many who are yet to be diagnosed. Everyday we make decisions about what we eat, so it’s important to know which foods may help prevent Alzheimer’s or slow its progression. 

The following foods have been shown by research studies in animals and humans alike to offer some protection against developing Alzheimer’s: leafy green vegetables like spinach, broccoli, kale; berries such as strawberries, blueberries; dark chocolate (in moderation); walnuts; legumes such as beans and lentils; olive oil.

The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. It is a slow, progressive illness that affects memory and other cognitive abilities. One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. The number of Americans aged 65 and older with Alzheimer’s doubles every five years; by 2025 there will be 7 million people living with the disease in the US alone! Yet, it has been proven that diet can play a significant role in preventing this debilitating condition from developing.

It is also important because some foods have more specific benefits than others; for example, spinach has high levels of iron and broccoli has high levels of Vitamin C. If you are having trouble coming up with new ideas for fruits and vegetables, here are some suggestions: apples, beets, pears, oranges.

Encourage your loved one to eat fish at least twice a week

Fish is a great source of protein and Omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to help maintain healthy brain function.   Fish also provides important nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, selenium, potassium and magnesium. These vitamins help promote heart health by lowering high blood pressure and reducing the risk of stroke. There are many different types of fish that you can choose from when cooking for your loved one including salmon, trout or cod. They can all be prepared in a variety ways so they taste delicious!  Eating at least two servings per week will not only make your loved one healthier but it’ll also improve their moods as well!

Limit sugar intake, especially in the form of sweets or sugary drinks

Dietary sugar, also known as sucrose and fructose, is a form of carbohydrate. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that people should consume less than 6 teaspoons of added sugars per day for women and 9 teaspoons per day for men. In the United States, the average person consumes more than 22 teaspoons or 354 grams of added sugars every single day. Sugar consumption has been linked to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and tooth decay. So how can you cut back on sugar? One way is by limiting your intake of sweets such as cakes or cookies or sugary drinks such as soda pop.

Get enough vitamin D by taking supplements or eating foods

The sun may be an essential part of your life, but it can also wreak havoc on your skin. Spending too much time in the sun without sunscreen or other protection can lead to wrinkles, age spots and even skin cancer. In order to get enough vitamin D you could take supplements or eat foods such as salmon that contain high levels of this important nutrient.
