by distillation

The process of distillation is commonly employed to produce popular essential oils like lavender, peppermint, tea tree oil, patchouli, and eucalyptus. Most oils are distilled in a single process. Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) stands out as an exception to the typical extraction methods used for essential oils, as it is purified through a process called fractional distillation.

Similarly, the resulting condensed water from this distillation process is commonly known as hydrosol, hydrolat, herbal distillate, or plant water essence. These hydrosols have gained popularity as scented products and are widely available for purchase. Hydrosols encompass a variety of examples, such as rose water, lavender water, lemon balm, clary sage, and orange blossom water. These are produced through the process of distillation, where the aromatic compounds from plant materials are extracted along with water vapor, resulting in a fragrant and therapeutic water-based solution. The utilization of herbal distillates in cosmetics is becoming increasingly prevalent in recent times.

Solvent extraction
