Stem Cell Research on Transverse Myelitis and other Neuroimmunologic Disorders

Human tissue cells proceed through many stages before they reach full development. These stages range from the earliest stem cell stage to their final form as a mature cell.

Transverse Myelitis is a neuroimmunological condition. It involves inflammation of the tissue in and around the spinal cord. Several factors can cause this condition. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Disorders of the immune system 
  • Certain types of infections
  • Other myelin conditions and disorders

Patients who are diagnosed with transverse myelitis and other neurodegenerative diseases often experience a range of symptoms. These include weakness, pain, and numbness.

Understanding Stem Cell Therapy

Medical researchers at Johns Hopkins are currently exploring the possibility that neural stem cells may encourage spinal cord tissue growth. As more data becomes available, patients and their doctors will gain more information about the exciting potential of stem cell treatments.
