How fitness impacts the brain of students?

In this world of excessive development in the technological field, the emphasis on exercising and physical activity is diluting at a very high rate. Students prefer virtual games and staying indoors over going out and hitting the field. Depreciation in time devoted to physical exercises influences the learning abilities and development of brain. It also promotes psychological misbalances which don’t go well for the students. 

Brain and exercises

Even one hour spend on the field regularly has visible effects on the working of brain. Physical activity leverages learning primarily in three ways:

  1. It revamps mind-set to enhance alertness, motivation, and concentration. 
  2. It induces the binding of nerve cells, which is the site for collecting new information.
  3. It catalyses the formation of fresh nerve cells in the brain’s manufacturing unit. 

All these changes prepare the brain for more active learning. Also, exercises have the added benefit of making it easier to retain information. Physical activity has a proportional relation with mental development. It improves memory, test scores and class behaviour.

Students these days’ struggle with a lot of mental issues pertaining to their personal problems. Exercising proves to be a great defender against these mental health issues


Sources of stress for students are numerous. Sometimes, parents and teachers are unaware about what’s going on in their minds and what’s bothering them. Having excessive stress at such age isn’t a good sign. Physical activities are a natural way of dealing with stress. It boosts confidence and activates social life of students, which come in handy to get rid of stressful thoughts. 

Anxiety and panic disorders 

Anxiety is again a common precursor to mental illness. Increased competition and social pressure makes the students anxious and hinders them from focusing on important subjects. Panic is the extreme form of anxiety and results from uncontrolled worrisome behaviour. Studies reveal that exercising can rewire brain, reduces tensions in muscles, and frees the student from anxiety by instilling a sense of self-esteem and resilience in them. 


Depression is again a common mental problem catching fire in the students. Exercising can help fight depression. Endorphin hormone released after physical workout can introduce a feeling of well-being and positivity in the brain. The students feel alive and energetic with the release of dopamine. Improvement in mood and the spirit to achieve something can help reduce depressive thoughts. 

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder) 

Many students, especially the young ones suffer from ADHD. They can’t stay still and are urged to constantly keep moving and indulging in some kind of activity. Attending school for long hours can prove challenging for them. If these students are allowed to engage in regular activities like karate, dancing, skating, football etc., then they can be more attentive and active in the class. 

Exercise is the best solution for mental, physical and emotional well-being. It brings positivity, encourages active participation, increases retention, wards off depression, helps fight anxiety and keeps students happy. It is a big contributor in better learning abilities of students.
